I imagine since Spike doesn't seem to have a real family, Twilight would be the closest thing to family to him.

This is so touching.
I like to think that sometimes there's a wonderful mother/son relationship between Twilight and Spike.
Your drawing is precious. You captured such a wonderful moment between these two. ^_^
Aaaww!!! This is sooo cuuute!!!
Twilight and Spike hugs are best hugs!!!
before the accident......
I'd glad he has a great "sister" like Twilight Sparkle.
Twilight: Aww Spike. I'm happy to have you for my son, I mean little brother, I mean, oh, never mind. ^^
I've taken a thorough browse of the rest of your work, and I absolutely love your art style ... almost to the point where I wouldn't even mind having your ponies as models for the show! The adorableness would be doubled.
*steals entire collection*
Darn it! Now you got me acting all sappy!
i dunno.. just wild idea... coz this is very touching...
She's like, "Uh, Spike? Are you OK?"
The expressions on Spike and Twilight are especially wonderful, as well as meaningful.
For Spike, I think he sees Twilight, beyond the other main characters, as the closest person he's ever known to a family. It is through Twilight and his family's influence that made Spike who he is. Despite being a dragon, a creature generally seen as vicious, he shows a gentle and loving face as he hugs his fellow pony. He is his own kind of dragon, and he has Twilight (along with the others) to thank for it.
For Twilight, I think her somewhat surprised look may be her realizing just how deep her bond with Spike really goes. From the moment he hatched, the two have been as close to each other as a brother and sister. The two have grown up together, worked together, and are together learning about friendship in their new life in Ponyville. Twilight can rest assured that, just as she's there for Spike, Spike is also there for her, whatever life may throw at the two.
The friendship this unicorn and dragon share is a beautiful example of the lengths and boundries that friendship can reach. I have a feeling their bond will have a greater role to play as the show progresses.
By the way, did you make this in Photoshop? I'm just curious.
Thanks for taking the time to write it.
I'm glad you think I got a lot of things right with this one, and that I handled the emotions well.
As for programs, it was drawn in the vector program Inkscape with some editing in Photoshop.
Of course Spike would say the same thing to Rarity, only as in he truly loves her.
